Bariatric wheelchairs are a perfect fit for heavier and larger individuals who are not suited to most standard-sized wheelchairs. With weight capacities of up to 325kg and a seat width of up to 80cm, bariatric, also known as extra wide or heavy-duty wheelchairs are strong enough to accommodate almost any user. Just like regular lighter wheelchairs, the bariatric models can also be foldable and feature armrests and swing-away footplates.
A bariatric wheelchair may be a good solution for your mobility needs. Typically, the chairs’ users may have conditions including:
cardiopulmonary disease
cardiovascular disease
osteoarthritis of the lower extremities
It is also possible that such a wheelchair could be used by people who have severe muscle weakness, resulting from neuromuscular or musculoskeletal issues. Examples of these conditions would be:
Huntington’s disease
Muscular dystrophy
Multiple Sclerosis
Spinal cord injuries
In some cases, people with higher weight and muscle weakness could create additional risks when in a conventional wheelchair. A bariatric wheelchair is built to overcome these issues and can be the best choice for heavier users who need both comfort and security alongside their mobility and independence.
